The Bruins

It was the Bruins' second Stanley Cup celebration in three years. We assumed there would be more. Little did we know that the party was over. The Bruins continued to be good for many more years - and truly outstanding in some of those years - but by late spring the Cup always ended up in somebody else's parade.

Since the Bruins last won a championship, the Celtics have won six championships. The Patriots have won three Super Bowls. Even the long tormented Red Sox have found their way to the winner's circle, with World Series titles in 2004 and '07.

Over the last decade, the Pats, Sox and Celtics have combined for six championships. That's why Boston sports fans under the age of 50 are obsessed with the Bruins - they all want what we old folks have, which is the satisfaction of having seen all four teams win it all.
A couple of weeks back, I ran into the Bruins' Shawn Thornton at Comcast SportsNet New England and shared with my thoughts about how youngins are desperate to see a Cup parade, if only to complete the superfecta.

The biggest change from the first two games to now is how the Bruins have dramatically cut down on giveaways.  Montreal's gameplan in the first two games was to let Boston make mistakes, and counterattack.  They had an obscene 14 giveaways in game 1.  On Saturday, in 50% more gametime, they had 10. The Bruins have tightened up, and have outscored the Habs 11-7 in the last three games.
